WATCH: Sergio Garcia 6-Putts in an Ernie Els style meltdown

Sergio’s 6 putt – yes I’m counting his shot from the edge of the green – was fairly unreported in the context of Saturday’s golf, where difficult conditions pushed up the average score from the first two days by 4 shots. It was so tough Jason Day described Ken Duke’s round of 65 as “like a new course record”.

The field posted a 75 average and Sergio’s quadruple bogey was one of the many contributions to this spike. Hence why The Players is such a great tournament, the pin placements can be manipulated to put low scorers back in their box before Sunday’s play.

This was slightly reminiscent of Ernie Els’ 6 putt at the Masters, you wouldn’t say Sergio suffers from “the yips”, but he had the beginnings of an infection this weekend.

Nothing illustrates TPC Sawgrass better than the hole before the Spaniard’s meltdown. To 6 putt after holing a 30-footer which breaks 90 degrees is very rare.
