Olivier Giroud has been a (un)popular scapegoat amongst Arsenal fans as a major cause of the Gunners’ failure to win the league this season. Similarly, the inconsistent Frenchman has been targeted by devoted fans of Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil – who may not have missed out on the Premier League assists record had it not been for Giroud’s less than clinical finishing in front of goal.

During the first few months of the 2015/2016 campaign, Mesut Ozil was on course to smash the assists record for a single Premier League season (currently held by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry). Ozil looked odds on to break the assists record as he had 16 to his name by the end of December.

After the turn of the new year Giroud suffered a serious slump in form and failed to find the net for 15 consecutive games.

Conclusively, Ozil tallied 19 assists in the Premier League last season, one behind Henry who created 20 goals in 2002/2003.

Mesut Ozil liked the Instagram post (see above) which explicitly blamed Giroud for the German failing to bag the record – yes, that is Ozil’s official account.

A subtle dig at Arsenal’s underperforming striker or just a mis-click by a member of Ozil’s PR team? Either way, the post has conspiracy theorists clutching at the possibility of a civil war between rival fan groups.

Irrespective of the Instagram post, the summer months will inevitably welcome the predictable flurry of Arsenal transfer rumours. Benzema, Higuain… Morata? This latest episode will certainly add fuel to the over-excited fire of Arsenal fan expectancy.
