After cruising to yet another Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich, David Alaba is widely regarded as one of the most valuable defenders in the modern game. The Austrian star has produced some memorable performances during his time in Germany, but he had a moment to forget last night, slotting home an embarrassing own goal again Malta.
At only 23 of age, David Alaba is often forgiven for his rare moments of ill-judgement in the Germany’s domestic league. However, such was the hilarity of his nightmare own-goal during Austria’s 2-1 international friendly victory, Alaba’s teammates won’t let him live it down lightly.
With Austria leading European minnows Malta 2-0, the minutes ticked away on a disappointing second-half. David Alaba seemingly took it upon himself to liven-up the game for spectators – neglecting to look up before sliding the ball towards his own goal, catching goalkeeper Ramazan Özcan’s off-guard and out of position as the ball trickled over the line.
Currently ranked as the 11th best international team in the world, remarkably this is only the second time Austria have managed to qualify for the European Championships – with many tipping them as the dark horses of the competition.
Austria have one more warm-up match to play before before their tournament commences against Hungary at Euro 2016 – Alaba will be hoping for a far more assured performance when Austria meet the Netherlands in just a few days time.
Alaba’s hilarious own-goal is certainly an uncharacteristic error, unfitting of the Austrian’s reputation as a classy centre-back. The Bundesliga champion has been closely linked with a move to Champions League victors Real Madrid ahead of Euro 2016:

Whether or not Alaba’s lapse in concentration will damage the prospect of a summer transfer remains to be seen. The hilarious own-goal certainly won’t have gone unnoticed at the Santiago Bernabeu.
