BREAKING: Tiger Woods withdraws from the U.S. Open

This is one hundred percent not in the least bit surprising. Tiger has just announced that he will not be playing at Oakmont next week and a large number of you probably don’t give a shit. I for one think it’s a massive shame that Tiger’s return is facing another set back.

Yes he’s had his time, but imagine what a tournament would look like when the “Big Three” AND Tiger Woods play on the same golf course. This is what sport is all about, the comeback is what we live for.

Many thought the recent video of Tiger hitting 3 consecutive tee shots into the water was a very solemn reminder that he’s far from ready. Still he continues to dictate the narrative with statements like “I have no time frame” and “I’m progressing nicely.” We’re forced to speculate about his status from the scraps of content he occasionally throws our way.  The truth is no current golfer draws the same attention as the 14-time major winner and whether you love him or loath him, his eventual return will be a blockbuster occasion.

Tiger posted a link to his website on Twitter and had this to say:

“While I continue to work hard on getting healthy, I am not physically ready to play in this year’s U.S. Open and the Quicken Loans National. I am making progress, but I’m not yet ready for tournament competition.”

“I want to thank everyone for their continued support. The positive texts, emails and calls I have received have been incredible. I want to wish Mike Davis, Diana Murphy, the USGA, the players and everyone at Oakmont a very successful week.”

“I will be hosting and attending my foundation’s tournament, the Quicken Loans National, at Congressional. It’s the 10th year of our tournament, and we continue to support the community, the military and the programs of the Tiger Woods Foundation.”
