Between the Copa América and the Euro, no one is paying attention to the U.S. Open Cup. If they had been, people would be up in arms about the dirty goal that the Los Angeles Galaxy scored in overtime on La Maquina in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup.
There are a few key questions about this strange goal:
Why is the stadium empty?
With the Copa America and the Euros going on, no one has time for the U.S. Open Cup. Plus, who really wants to see an LA Galaxy side missing all its good players beat up on an amateur team?
What is the ref doing?
The ref appears to blow his whistle and not give a fuck about what anyone is doing. There’s a Galaxy player down with a cramp and all of La Maquina, which means machine in Spanish, is standing around with their hands on their hips.
Side note: if you’ve never heard standup comedian who tells “the machine” story, you’re in for a treat:
Back to live action, I have no idea why the ref blew his whistle. Soccer isn’t boxing; you don’t have to protect yourself at all times.
The ref is supposed to wait until everyone’s ready before he blows this whistle. He did La Maquina dirty. Unfortunately, it’s the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup, so no one really cares.
