Jürgen Klopp Signs Major Extension With Liverpool

Liverpool fans have something to be excited about. No, Steven Gerrard didn’t stumble into a time machine. But Jürgen Klopp has signed a major extension to continue managing the club through 2022.

Klopp has restored purpose and belief back to a proud club that had started to stagnate.

When you have an individual of Jürgen’s quality in the building it makes perfect sense to secure that person for the long term. To not do so would be irresponsible.

Joint statement from Tom Werner and Mike Gordon, Liverpool executives

Just one year under the German has been enough to get the fans and players excited again. He knows how to win and how to have fun.

But he hasn’t done it alone. Klopp has leaned heavily on his two main goons, Zeljko Buvac and Peter Krawietz, along the way.

Like a good general, Klopp makes sure the whole team eats, so when Klopp got an extension, Buvac and Krawietz got extensions, too.

It’s hard to express in words how honoured myself, Zeljko and Peter feel by the commitment shown in us by the ownership and the club in general.

So just who are Klopp’s assistants?

Zeljko Buvac – Right Hand Man

Klopp and Buvac go waaay back. They played together at Mainz in the ’90s, and when Klopp was hired as coach in 2001, he tapped his old teammate as an assistant.

It is very collaborative how we work. We’ve been this way since we started together. Many years ago a journalist in Germany said I was ‘the eye’ and Zeljko was ‘the brain’ and people repeat it.

Peter Krawietz

When Klopp took the Dortmund job in 2008, he took Buvac with him.

Buvac is also the manager of Republika Srpska’s national team, one of two constitutionally and legally recognized entities (though not by UEFA or FIFA) within Bosnia and Herzegovina (the other being the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina).

Peter Krawietz – The Brain

Krawietz is another one of Klopp’s OG homies. He’s been Klopp’s head scout and Xs and Os man since back at Mainz.

We are like a music band, with their own instrument. Jurgen is the band leader, and others are behind him playing the bass guitar or drum. I’m not sure which instrument is mine!

Peter Krawietz

Liverpool has done a good thing by giving Klopp a fat extension, and Klopp has done a good thing by making sure his two top lieutenants are along for the ride.

Teamwork makes the dream work.

Klopp and Company aren’t the only coaches with their eyes on the Premier League prize, though.

Between Pep Guardiola at Man City, Antonio Conte at Chelsea, Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, Maruicio Pochettino at Tottenham, and Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, half the league expects to finish at the top of the table.

But there can be only one.
