Man United’s FIFA 17 ratings suggest Rooney is sleeping with someone at EA Sports

It’s quite amusing really, that FIFA ratings provoke more over-the-top outrage and offence than the goings-on in real life of the beautiful game. Granted, football fans are in general always looking to be irked by one thing or other.

Ahead of the launch of the new FIFA 17 game in September – we’ve already seen some leaked footage of the next instalment – the ratings for the Red Devils have made their way out into the public domain. As usual, we’ve all been left scratching our heads.

Wayne Rooney’s rating of 87 is just about as undeserved as they come, with the Red Devils captain no longer possessing any attributes that enable him to be one of the top-rated players in the game. The former Everton man no longer has that clinical nature, can no longer turn games on their head in the blink of an eye and has certainly lost that aggressive mentality and several yards of pace.

The most remarkable thing about the England captain’s newfound rating is the fact that it’s actually an increase on the previous two versions of FIFA. FIFA 15 saw the then-28-year-old drop from an 87 rating to an 86, with the most recent game cutting another point off of Rooney to 85.

Which one of these Manchester United moments is your favourite?

Eight goals and six assists from 28 Premier League games last campaign isn’t the sort of form to warrant a +2 ratings increase on FIFA 17. So why on earth has it happened?

“For me he will be a 9, a 10, a nine and a half but not a 6 and not even an 8.”

Jose Mourinho

Oh, so that’s why! Get a few big words from one of the game’s best managers and you’ll find yourself climbing up the FIFA ratings board.

Given the wealth of viewing options and statistical insight we have in today’s world, it’s truly baffling that the EA Sports minions seem to just base ratings upon just how well known a player is.
