Transfer deadline day is upon us ?. For all its faults, such as being too late in the season, not allowing players to settle at clubs and the awkward timing with the international break; you still can’t help but get excited for Jim White & co. losing the plot over on Sky Sports.
In light of this, here’s a look back at five of the funniest moments on deadline day…
Often subject to heavy abuse on this day, typified by memes such as the Frenchman trying to purchase the cheapest deal possible in the McDonald’s 99p meal.
However, back in 2014 – ON DEADLINE DAY – Wenger did himself no favours by flying over to Italy, to referee a ‘Match for Peace’. Although the game was organised by Pope Francis, aiming to promote religious harmony, the decision by the Frenchman infuriated Gunners as the North London outfit were crying out for a striker.
Still, The Gunners boss did manage to land Danny Welbeck from Tesco FC in the late hours of deadline day. And the Frenchman has slightly upgraded this year from a chicken mayo, to a quarter-pounder in signing Lucaz Perez.
2) Fabian Delph
We are actually still scratching our heads over this one?! How the ex-Villa captain made such a statement after ‘talks’ with Man City, to only go and then sign for the Citizens is as confusing as Harry Kane taking corners.
What made matters worse, was new City boys, Raheem Stirling and Fabian Delph taking a selfie on the International break with the Three Lions, self-declaring ‘snakes-on-a-plane’. Although Samuel L. Jackson was pleased with the extra bit of publicity, it didn’t half piss off some (most) Villains.
3) David Gold
Ohhow David managed to royally cock this one up. ‘DG’ managed to get three things wrong in this Twitter announcement. The pictured Italian player is, 27-year-old, defender, from Juventus. Yet, Mr Gold managed to get this totally confused with 23-year-old, Pedro Obiang, Spanish midfielder, from Sampdoria.
Someway to be welcomed into East London – are Andre Marriner and David Gold drinking the same coffee???
4) Sex Sports News
To be fair to Sky’s, Alan Irwin, did well to deal with the incoming purple dildo. Some Everton fans thought it would be funny to try knock the correspondent off his game, and to be fair… it was ‘kin funny ?.
Sadly though, some of these acts by fans have stopped Sky sending reporters outside grounds on deadline day, amidst the unpredictable nature of live reporting. For instance, Sky were left a little red-faced at Selhurst Park after a banner was revealed by Palace fans:
5) Peter Odemwingie
The list would not be complete, without the then-West Brom striker’s famous drive down to West London in 2013. There is no surprise that ‘Arry Redknapp was involved at the other end of the deal, as ‘Arry was in charge of QPR at the time. Only for ex-boss-of-every-journeyman to say…
“Wires got crossed”
When haven’t Redknapp’s wires got crossed???
It has been reported that Peter has just got back from dropping off Joe Hart in Torino, and is now en route to pick up the likes of Wilshere, Adebayor and Balotelli trying to find them a new club.
Best of luck, lads…
