As Team SoloMid prepared to face the reverse-sweeping legends of FlyQuest eSports, fans settled in for what they hoped would be an unpredictable series. FLY provided the surprise result of the NA LCS Playoffs quarter-finals, fighting back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Counter Logic Gaming in dramatic fashion, a victory team captain Hai “Hai” Du Lam would later describe as one of “Riot’s scripts”. If the quarter-final had been scripted, then the writer certainly took the week off ahead of the TSM vs FLY series, as stereotypical plays and errors occurred across the map.
From Team SoloMid AD Carry Jason “Wildturtle” Tran “flashing in” to FlyQuest eSports top laner incinerating opponents on Rumble, the second of the NA LCS semi-final series showcased every infamous trait and renowned talent of the pro players on stage.
Team SoloMid ultimately secured their seat on the plane to Vancouver in emphatic fashion, withstanding FLY’s early pressure in each game to convincingly overpower their rivals. The established fanbase of the former Cloud9 roster were hoping for some repeat heroics from the CLG series, though were left disappointed by FlyQuest’s spirited performance on stage.
Despite a number of nearly moments in pivotal team fights, Hai’s co-ordinated efforts fell short of dealing the killing blow, allowing opportunities for TSM shot-callers Kevin “Hauntzer” Yarnell and Søren “Bjergsen” Bjerg to lead potent counter attacks.
Whilst the overall series failed to provide the drama of the previous round, the tie presented a showreel of iconic player moments:
