Call me a romantic, call me deluded or call me a drunk optimist. But, San Marino encapsulated what football and sport in general is all about in about 30 seconds.
A very famous American sports coach said…
“Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing”
And a maybe more well known quote, is Ricky Bobby from Talladega Nights…
“If you ain’t first, you’re last”
Well, to those sort of sayings, San Marino have just gone, BOLLOCKS?. The national side showed how the enjoyment, and involvement, even when getting turned over 6, 7, 8-0 at pretty much every qualifying match, goes exactly against all these high-brow comments about purely competing ‘to win’.
And yesterday, against Norway; they had their moment. The national side’s first away goal since 2001 in a World Cup qualifying match, and my word, did the lads and staff celebrate the goal.

Just goes to show, you don’t need to win all the time, or constantly score to enjoy yourself. The lads lapped up every moment of that goal; they probably could go have gone onto to lose the game 5-1… and it wouldn’t have mattered to them.
The San Marino Twitter account had an absolute field day, and even managed a pop at England… don’t blame them.

We’re not sure if this is the ‘exact’ San Marino account, but it still managed to generate plenty of traction over social media.
Perhaps what was even more amusing than the celebrations and Twitter account, was a Norwegian media channel’s reaction to the goal. Utter gold.
We’ll see what else San Marino can muster up in qualifying. But, we all bloody hope they find the net again, so that we see some more moments like these. Legends.
