The European Tour wants to shake things up this year, at least in the month of May. They just unveiled a new tournament format, called GolfSixes. Here is the scoop on how it works.
On May 6-7 this year, Golfsixes at the Centurion Club in St Albans will include a one million Euro prize. The event pits two man teams from 16 nations against each other. The teams are composed of the top ranked European Tour member from each nation, and a mate of their choice. The catch? Teams are only playing 6 holes at a time.
The first day sees teams split into 4 groups of 4 with the top 2 teams moving forward in the tournament. Take note this bears similarities to the popular UEFA Champions League stages. On the second day of play, there will be quarter finals, semi finals and a championship round. The tournament is played in a match style format. Fans may watch the tournament live on Sky Sports or the European Tour’s world feed.
Speaking 0f the fans, they truly make the new competition. On the first tee, pyrotechnics and music will be front and center. And yes, golf is no exception to the rule that everything is better with fire. Amphitheater seats wind around the 6 hole setup and the Tour encourages players to interact with fans. Players will conduct on course interviews during play. Social media makes up a large component of the tournament, featuring exclusive social media content meant to bring fans closer to the game.
Now, if you’re still with me, you realize this is wild for a golf tournament. So what could be the reason such a divergent tournament. Keith Pelley, head honcho over at the European Tour, had this to say:
“We have said for some time that golf needs to modernise and introducing innovative new formats is a major part of achieving that aim.”
I think Golfsixes will be interesting to say the least. I can’t wait to see a picture of Rory doing a fist pump with flames shooting from the sides of the tee box.
