Cristiano Ronaldo has been making defenders look like Sunday League players for years now. It’s therefore somewhat surprising, that the Real Madrid star has called Ashley Cole his hardest ever opponent. Erm, has the Portuguese captain been drinking?
If you’re going to come up against CR7, you know what you’re going to get. A strong, fast forward, who will never have a single piece of hair out of place. The Real Madrid superstar has made a career out of doing the impossible, in addition to attracting the envy of pretty much every man on the planet.
Regardless, many footballers will be telling their grandchildren about the time they faced the great Ronaldo in years to come. And, Ashley Cole will have an even better story to tell than most, after CR7 was asked by Coach Mag who was the toughest defender he faced…
“Over the years I had some great battles with Ashley Cole, he does not give you a second to breathe
He was such a tenacious player when he was at his peak, quick, tough in the tackle. You knew it would never be an easy game.”
Try telling Cheryl Cole that, when Ash’ was in his peak, he certainly was ‘quick, and tough in the tackle’, the poor lady never had an easy night.
Aside from this, the Englishman should be doing cartwheels upon hearing the news, as the former Arsenal and Chelsea man trumps some pretty high calibre names.
Nemanja Vidic, Sergio Ramos, John Terry and Carlos Puyol all jump off the page as big omissions from this award and they all would’ve been fair selections. Ironically enough, some of the candidates have been some of the most despised players in the game – guess that shows reputation doesn’t mean everything.
The two legends have faced off on numerous occasions so it does make sense, with Cole constantly thwarting Ronaldo during their many United versus Chelsea, and Portugal versus England battles… Those were the good ol’ days.
