Gooners around the world will be letting off fireworks in their bathrooms this weekend, as knowledge that Mario Balotelli is a fan of the club spreads.
With Alexis Sánchez dazzling and two very good back-ups in Giroud and Pérez, it’s unlikely Arsene Wenger would touch the troublesome Italian with a bargepole, but Super Mario has spoken of his admiration for the North London club.
To be fair to the Nice forward, he has found something like form this season – scoring six goals to help his side unexpectedly lead the way in Ligue Un – but the prospect of a return to the Premier League still seems unlikely. To add a little bit of context, Radamel Falcao and Bafetimbi Gomis are both ahead of Balotelli in the goalscoring charts, players who didn’t exactly set the Premier League alight. The one advantage Mario might have on this front is that he has proven himself adept at actually setting things alight.
There is a good chance that, aside from the fact Balotelli was so abysmal during his time at Liverpool and comes with well-documented issues, Le Proffeseur could be put off by the ridiculous clauses Balotelli has in his contracts.
The 26-year-old also made it clear that he wasn’t courting a move, saying:
“The first one I think in England is Manchester City, and the second team I always like is Arsenal. That doesn’t mean I’ll go to play there. I just like them.”
The defensive nature of the “I just like them” at the end makes us imagine Balotelli as a 14-year-old defending an odd crush while his friends take the piss. It’s actually kind of endearing.
As one potential move is born, another dies though; Balotelli also remarked assertively that he would never return to Liverpool. Bad news, Reds fans.
“[If I go back to England] for sure not Liverpool.”
It’s difficult to imagine Arsenal fans happier about this news than supporters of Klopp’s team, which is an odd thing to say about a superstar player declaring preference for the Gooners over Liverpool. Still, as a neutral, it would be amazing to have Balotelli back in Britain. I just like him, okay?
