Ryan Giggs set for Sunderland job

When a managerial vacancy comes available, Alan Curbishley instantly gets installed at around 14/1, despite having last managed West Ham in 2008, a random former player makes it into the top three for favourites, and, more recently, Ryan Giggs’ self-entitlement sees him come in at around 8/1.

This afternoon, though, the Manchester United icon’s self-entitlement could very well see the Welshman take over at David Moyes-less Sunderland, with bookies across the board making the former winger odds-on favourite for the hot-seat.

The Black Cats relegation from the top flight of English football had been a long time coming, and with owner, Ellis Short, trying to sell the club, an appointment in the ilk of Ryan Giggs makes perfect sense.

Due to Giggs’ desire to break into the management game – you have to assume the Welshman’s CV merely reads: “I am Ryan Giggs”, ten times – he will be a relatively cheap option for Short, with no compensation or breaking of contracts needed.

The list of candidates alongside Giggs, also shows why Short is close to taking a gamble on one of the dullest men in football, with the options about as appealing as going for a test drive with Tiger Woods – so much time for the obscure appearance of Clarence Seedorf on the list; can you imagine the Dutchman taking his Total Football ways to the likes of John O’Shea and Victor Anichebe?!
