Liverpool icon, Steven Gerrard, has revealed how many times he came close to ruining his legendary Anfield legacy, by joining the devil in disguise, Jose Mourinho:
“It depends how close, close is.
“Of course there was a lot of speculation around 2004/2005.
“He tried to sign me probably about five or six times during my career.
“Twice at Chelsea, he tried to sign me at Inter Milan and for Real Madrid as well.
“I could have gone and played for him at different teams but I never did.”
It has long been documented just how close Gerrard came to joining Mourinho at Chelsea (the first time around), with death threats to the former England captain causing him to reject any move to the Blues – Reds fans out there will, of course, refute those claims (before suggesting that Gerrard is the love child of Bob Paisley and The Beatles).
Gerrard, often dubbed the greatest player to never win the Premier League, no doubt harbours some regrets about not completing a fairly respectable trophy cabinet. However, moves to Inter Milan or Real Madrid would’ve been exciting for English football as a whole to see, and ones you’d expect the former LA Galaxy player to have thrived at.
Not since Steve McManaman become the undervalued Galactico has an Englishman truly succeeded aboard, at one of the game’s elites. But Gerrard – and Lampard – will always be the standout players, for a generation that promised to deliver so much more, in and away from England.
