Man United set to hand Herrera the new deal he deserves

Manchester United have unsurprisingly made big moves this summer to bring Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku to Old Trafford but their next significant move could come closer to home.

The Daily Star claims Manchester United are opening negotiations with Ander Herrera regarding a new deal, with the Red Devils set to hand him a significant raise by offering a whopping £175,000-a-week deal.

Herrera, who was captured from Spanish side Athletic Bilbao in 2014, initially struggled to find his way in the Premier League but the arrival of Jose Mourinho last summer has brought the best out of the 27-year-old, who’s become a favourite of the Portuguese boss.

Under Louis van Gaal, who brought the Spaniard to English football, Herrera was limited in a defensive role but Mourinho has allowed him to play with more freedom – and the Spaniard won the club’s Player of the Year award last term ahead of the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba.

Whilst Herrera may never be one of the Premier League’s biggest names, the next 12 months are crucial as he’s now entering the prime years of his career and will push for a spot in Spain’s World Cup squad next summer.

The Basque-born ace only made his international debut last year, against England at Wembley, and is considered by many to be a late bloomer. Having found his feet last season, though, Herrera could now be a crucial cog in the machine for both club and country.

Herrera’s fine performances have seen him attract the interest of Barcelona but he still seems a little sort of being the sort of player who can excel for the Catalan giants and staying at Manchester United is definitely the right choice for him.
