- Jordan Spieth has announced he is to partner with Coca-Cola.
- The news comes as he overtakes Tiger Woods as the number one earner in golf.
You don’t need telling that the 22-year-old is one of those most marketable names in sport. His form is unstoppable and his image is squeaky clean, which makes him ripe for the picking as far as global brands are concerned.
Neither the company nor his agent would comment on the size of the deal but it’s believed to be one of the largest they have ever signed with an athlete. What’s clear is that Spieth will be a serious pin-up boy, featuring in ads, on social media, packaging and even point-of-sale.
“Coca-Cola has always been associated with iconic sporting events and some of the world’s greatest athletes, so this is an incredibly cool opportunity for me,” Spieth said in a statement. “As a brand ambassador, I look forward to growing awareness for the sport of golf globally and engaging with fans in exciting new ways.”
According to ESPN, Spieth will be in the same category as Taylor Swift, Lebron James and Jennifer Aniston – who all have contracts with various soft drink brands – meaning his already astronomical earnings will increase further. The two-time major winner recently overtook Tiger as the number one money maker in golf.
“Jordan is a tremendous athlete who not only represents the golf community but American culture,” said Peggy Loos, vice-president of connections activation at Coca-Cola. “He is authentic, comes across as modest and very much represents the values of our company.”
“Coca-Cola is one of the most powerful global brands, and we could not be more excited for Jordan to be a spokesperson,” said Spieth’s agent. “We had interest from companies of all shapes and sizes in the beverage category, but this made the most sense to us based on the brand synergies with both Jordan and his foundation, Coke’s global platform, and it’s activation strategy.”
Spieth can add Coca-Cola to current sponsors AT&T, Under Armour, Titleist, Rolex and Netjets. Ca-Ching!
