- Speith and McIlroy will finally play together for the first time in 2016
- Abu Dhabi will host the event for their continued rivalry
The PGA Tour has already started their “wraparound” season, meaning they have already hosted nine regular tournaments and two limited-field events.
“But with all due to respect to those events…the real golfing season starts in Abu Dhabi this week,” Phil Casey of the Press Association writes. “What it can crucially boast…is world number one Jordan Spieth and number three Rory McIlroy in the same field for the first time in a season which promises a thrilling battle for supremacy and the game’s biggest prizes.”
McIlroy won the last tournament of 2015 in Abu Dhabi and making his debut in 2016 right where he left off.
“I didn’t know he was playing. I’ll probably withdraw now,” Spieth jokingly said last week about facing McIlroy.
“In a season that he considered lost, he still came back and ended up winning the Race to Dubai and the final event,” Spieth added. “It proves what a player he is. I’m sure there’s very few people working harder than he is to make this season his best season yet, which is scary. Hopefully, I can help prevent that to an extent.”
Spieth is on top of his game right now, and I don’t believe he should be too worried, after winning with an 8-stroke lead against a top billed cast. You can bet that Rory was probably watching Speith very carefully to see what he would be up against this week, and he should definitely be feeling some nerves. This is why it should be very exciting to see how the two feed off of each other’s energy, one brimming with sustained success and the other pumped and ready to go after a re-energizing break.
Who will reign supreme?
