What did Henrik Stenson do after winning The Open Championship?

I couldn’t quite believe my eyes when I saw what Henrik Stenson was doing the day after winning the biggest trophy in professional golf. Most of us would be clutching the toilet bowl with the same possessiveness as the Claret jug, our suffering compounded by the faint aroma of Jaegermeister. Not Henrik Stenson. He decided to follow through on a commitment he had made to his friend Sergio Garcia by attending the Spaniard’s charity event in Switzerland.

Henrik Stenson has a legendary sense of humour and is widely recognised as one of golf’s “Goodfellas”. The Swede dedicated the win to the passing of a dear friend, an emotional moment that was clearly hard for his tearful wife.

“I lost a dear friend on Wednesday morning back in the States, who battled against cancer for a few years. I feel like he’s been with me all week and he was a keen golfer. Mike, this one’s for you,” said the 40-year-old as he gave a speech at Royal Troon.

Stenson’s Facebook page goes into some detail about Gerbich, 74, who Stenson knew through golf in Dubai, and lived in Scottsdale before passing away on Wednesday. It was a nice touch from one of golf’s more principled men. Playing an individualistic sport that demands confidence – bordering on the arrogant – can often be a petri dish for arseholary. That’s why Henrik’s effort to join Sergio for a charity day at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz in the Swiss mountains is extra-special.

He could of easily ducked out and nobody would have noticed. The  star-studded lineup would have covered for him: Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Zach Johnson, Luke Donald, Justin Thomas, Rafa Cabrera-Bello, Lee Westwood, David Feherty, Jose Maria Olazabal and Adam Scott, the list is endless.

It’s great for golf to see such an international winner cross the line in a major championship. His caddie for one will be “grateful”, not only does he get a £150,000 bonus, he’ll also have to quit smoking after losing a bet with the Swede.
