5 Things you (probably) don’t know about Jimmy Walker

Jimmy Walker is the man.

1. Jimmy Walker is one of the boys

Jimmy is one of the most respected players on Tour. It’s always a good indication of a player’s popularity when you see a large number of guys sticking around to congratulate him.

At 37, you would hardly bookmark Jimmy as a member of the SB2K16 clique. The fact he is appreciated by such a wide range of players tells you a lot about the man. He is one of the “Goodfellas”.

2. Walker came to the party very late

Jimmy had played in 187 events without a win on the PGA Tour. He finally bagged his first victory in 2014, starting an impressive run of form. What’s awesome about his development is the consistency in his improvement. Walker got gradually better every season between 2008 and 2014.

2014: 5.78 million, FedEx Cup: 7th – First win on the PGA Tour

2013 $2.11 million, FedEx Cup: 36th

2012: $1.63 million, FedEx Cup: 62nd

2011: $1.336 million, FedEx Cup: 50th

2010: $937,987, FedEx Cup: 84th

2009 $662,683, FedEx Cup: 148th

2008: $282,249, FedEx Cup: 192

3. Jimmy is a bit of a NEEERD

Jimmy is an avid astronomer and runs a successful website that showcases his photography skills.

Walker spends much of his downtime looking through a telescope, something commentators remind us of with occasional Skywalker quips. That’s not to say he isn’t a massive fan of Star Wars.

4. Jimmy’s wife is impressive

Walker met his wife, Erin, in 2004 while she was volunteering at a Web.com Tour event. Erin runs a successful blog, Tour Wife Travels, which details her life on the road with her husband. Jimmy and his wife take a mobile home to each of his tournaments and they spent this year’s PGA Championship camped next to the Day family. Clearly Jimmy doesn’t care about fraternising with the enemy.

Erin is also a nationally ranked show jumper, who occasionally competes.

Jimmy’s has a sense of humour

It’s not surprising to see how many players want to practice with Jimmy in the days running up to a tournament. He’s a laid back guy who loves a joke, something Natalie Gulbis found when she played a “show us your tits” prank on him.

I love how he handled this announcer…
