Andrew “Beef” Johnston will not be making the trip to Rio, there are about six British golfers who get the call up ahead of the popular Englishman. Team GB – who will be represented by Danny Willett and Justin Rose – are looking in reasonable shape. I would put money on a USA/UK showdown, with a bit of competition from Stenson and Garcia.
Nobody knows what to expect when the golf starts in ten days. Jaco Van Zyl has accused top line golfers of using the Zika Virus as an excuse. The South African decided to skip the Open and the PGA Championships in order to prepare for Rio.
“Honestly, I can’t feel that the Zika virus would be their reason not to go, the Zika virus is in Florida,”said Van Zyl, number 71 in the world ranking.
“If I can choose one (a major championship win or an Olympic gold medal) I would definitely take the gold,” said the 37-year-old, who was runner-up at the Turkish Airlines Open last year. “The reason being that there are four majors every year and one Olympic gold medallist in 112 years.”
“To get an opportunity and let it pass by doesn’t make much sense to me.”
It really wouldn’t surprise me if some of those who withdrew end up regretting their decision. Obviously Van Zyl’s attitude is unique, and quite frankly overzealous, but I’m starting to think that Olympic golf will surprise a few people.

For the other guys, a break from golf is long overdue. The Travellers Championship starts on Thursday and there are a host of big names missing. I bet a lot of the guys are taking the opportunity to get some R&R before the big money tournaments start up again. BEEF was playing at Silo Ridge, NY and made a friend during the day.
