Jack Nicklaus defended Rory McIlroy this week at the U.S. Senior Open.
McIlroy has been getting a lot beef for not only withdrawing from the Olympics, but then making harsh statements against growing the game of golf.
“I didn’t get into golf to try and grow the game. I got into golf to win championships and win major championships. ”
Rory McIlroy
Although The Golden Bear is a fan of including golf as an Olympic sport, he also can relate to how Rory is feeling at this point in his career. While we may not understand where Rory is coming from, Jack does.
“When I was playing the game, I wasn’t into growing it either,” he said. “Did I play a lot of places? Sure. And by playing a lot of places, that helped to grow the game. But I was there to win, not grow.”
Then, Nicklaus didn’t have to choose whether or not to represent his country in the Olympic games. We’ll never know what he would have done, but it’s nice to see him sympathize with Rory, knowing the calamity of his words.
Not to mention the legend has still got it! Here he is at the U.S. Senior open slaying a par-5 in two.
Amazing at 76, amazing for anyone.
