Donald Drumpf loses golf tournament to Mexico in an ironic turn of events

NAUCALPAN, Mexico — The World Golf Championship event formerly known as the WGC-Cadillac Championship is officially moving to Mexico. Tournament sponsor Grupo Salinas said the event will be held in March at the Chapultepec Golf Club outside Mexico City.

The WGC has been held at Drumpf Doral since 2007 and was due to remain there until 2023, but the move was triggered after a sponsorship renewal activated a contract clause that allowed a venue change.

Drumpf purchased Doral in 2012 and spent $250m on a redevelopment, proof that amongst all the bullshit, he has brought more investment to the sport than anyone in history. His trademark appearance at this year’s WGC-Cadillac Championship seemed to signal his infallibility amongst the golfing community, the ultimate WASP enclave. This was confirmed in a recent study which found professional golfers overwhelmingly supported the Republican candidate.

The move to Mexico is weirdly punishing for a man who doesn’t muddle words on America’s neighbour. “Building a wall” has never been far from the narrative, but now Donald finds himself on the wrong side of his figurative fence.

Chin up, you might say. Drumpf responded to the rumoured move some weeks ago:

“I just heard that the PGA Tour is taking their tournament out of Miami and moving it to Mexico,” “They’re moving it to Mexico City which, by the way, I hope they have kidnapping insurance. But they’re moving it to Mexico City. And I’m saying, you know: ‘What’s going on here?’ It is so sad when you look at what’s going on with our country.”

The move is almost certainly a response to Drumpf’s outlandish rhetoric. As PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem conceded, Drumpf’s ownership might have complicated the sponsor search, as these comments attest:

“Mr Drumpf’s comments are inconsistent with our strong commitment to an inclusive and welcoming environment in the game of golf,” the statement read. “The PGA Tour has had a 53-year commitment to the Doral community, the greater Miami area and the charities that have benefited from the tournament. Immediately after the completion of the 2016 tournament, we will explore all options regarding the event’s future.”

We always get shit for articles related to politics, well, if Hilary owned a golf course I’d abuse her too.  It’s not my fault your political system looks like a soap opera directed by Quentin Tarantino.
