Dustin Johnson is known for his casual attitude and long drives. Although he has always coasted by flirting with the leaderboard, it wasn’t until this year that he broke through and gained that major title.
That’s what led Dustin to become the 2016 Player of the Year and Golf.com interviewing him and his family, including Wayne Gretzky, his future father in law.
Apparently Gretzky wants greatness to run in the family and that includes Dustin.
“I’ve told Dustin he has to be more like Tiger,” Gretzky said.
“I don’t mean he has to be Tiger — you only get a few athletes like that a century. But part of what made Tiger Tiger was relentlessness.”
Dustin seems like the guy who is happy to win what he can but doesn’t stress about maintaining a streak. He won his major and then went on vacation. Golfers like Tiger Woods or Jordan Spieth would work even harder after that win to continue winning, and that’s what Gretzky wants him to emulate.
“If I scored 50 goals in a season, I wanted 70 the next year. If I got 70, I wanted 90. Never, ever settle,” Gretzky said. “Dustin just won three tournaments and a major. That’s a great year. Now go win five tournaments and two majors. I want him to see that only he can put limits on himself.”
It’s a great sentiment, that Dustin’s father in law wants him to push himself and be the greatest athlete he can be, but not everyone has that mental push. I think that Johnson won the U.S. Open because of his nonchalant attitude (not being phased by the controversial ruling).
Dustin is set for life when it comes to money and he is enjoying the time he can spend with his family. There’s no doubt that he loves the game, but he will never be like Tiger Woods.
