Sounds like somebody’s sad he lost his meal ticket! David Leadbetter, who coached 19-year-old phenom Lydia Ko for the past three seasons, is lashing out at the star’s parents in the wake of his split from the star.
“At this point, their sole occupation is taking care of Lydia’s every need,” said Leadbetter of Ko’s father, Gil Hong Ko, and mother, Bon Sook Hyon, per Golf Digest’s Jaime Diaz.
“They tell her when to go to bed, what to eat, what to wear, when to practice and what to practice. And they expect her to win every tournament. They are good people, who love their daughter and want the very best for her, and Lydia has never been to college and is still young. But they are naive about golf. And at some point, they’ve got to let the bird fly from the nest. I would often think, ‘It’s not easy coaching three people.’ ”
Hasn’t he read Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother? Come on, David! You’re just upset that Michelle Wie sucks, you have no stars in your stable on the PGA Tour, you’re addicted to terrible headwear, and you’ve never had a coaching triumph to follow up your “rebuilding” of Nick Faldo’s swing.
And while this isn’t a golf swing theory website, I’d encourage readers to Google “David Leadbetter ruined Michelle Wie” or “David Leadbetter ruined Lydia Ko” for some hot takes on this guy’s destructive force.
Leadbetter also delivered this gem: “My parting words to Lydia were ‘Take control of your life. Take control of your golf game. Make more of your own decisions.”
David, why don’t you take control of your life and realize you’re not an elite teacher. Conduct your golf camps, hock for Joseph A. Bank, and every teaching product laid at your feet.
We’ll make an official CLICKON Golf prediction: David Leadbetter won’t pick up any new students in the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking.
