After banning the creation of new courses in 2004, the Communist state has gone from limiting advancements to straight out cutbacks. The Chinese government now has plans to close 111 courses, with other restrictions on 65 additional courses.
Continuing in the Cold War theme of Communist nations standing against anything remotely American; the Communist government in China is shutting down over 100 golf courses.
These closures were allegedly an effort to conserve land and water, saying that the courses were a harmful use of those areas. Although, it’s more likely that the Communist regime just hates happiness, let’s be honest.
After golf’s inclusion in the 2016 Olympics in Rio, the game’s global appeal appeared to be on an upswing. The game is going to be back for the 2020 event in Tokyo, and it’s disappointing to hear this news in a nation so close to the next Olympic site.
The number of courses in China had been on the rise in recent years, even with the government ban on new courses. Despite the government’s resistances to a bourgeoisie endeavor, courses were built under the guise of parks or general “resorts”.
With more and more talk about “growing the game”, the opposition from one of the world’s largest markets is disheartening to say the least.
On the bright side…
In other, more positive news, today is a beautiful day to be an America, where there are still more than 15,000 courses just waiting to be played. Just like every other day, it’s a good day to be an American. Especially if you’re a golfer.
