5 years later, The USGA are about to finish revising “The Rules of Golf”

The USGA’s glacial march toward revising the Rules of Golf is nearly complete.

It doesn’t seem appropriate to congratulate an organisation for doing their job, but much like a Paige Spiranac Sponsor’s invitation, certain exemptions can be made. Hallelujah!

The USGA has apparently spent the last five years “modernizing” the Rules of Golf. And while some were asking, “How could that take five years?” The blue-blazered bunch were holding their annual meeting at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Washington, D.C. (of course)

Expected to tip their hand, the Union of Select Goofy A-holes said it will be another month until they reveal the reforms.

Regardless, if you’re anything other than a bar-admitted lawyer who carries around a copy of the Rules of Golf in your bag, you have to be (cautiously) elated.

Reportedly, the current 34-rule structure of the Rules of Golf will be blown up. In its place, the USGA is expected to roll out a more visual system. In other words, something you don’t need the aforementioned lawyer to understand.

The new rules will be introduced in March, which will also begin a six-month review period where the golf community can give the USGA feedback. Asking actual golfers what they think? Brilliant!

After this, the USGA and R&A will gather to draft the final language (bet that party is lit) at the end of 2017. And then, finally, the new rules (or Rules, depending on your pomposity) will go into effect in January of 2019. That has to be worth a celebratory drink or two, eh Diana…

Writing about the USGA’s super summit for Golf Digest, Ryan Herrington presented this quote from USGA Executive Director Mike Davis that is, well, everything.

“How come we can’t have an instance where someone can [take their phone and] say ‘Suri, I hit my ball into a water hazard. What are my options?’ ” Davis said.

LMAO! Suri! You KNOW he said Suri and not Siri. But yeah, that’s just how hip the USGA is in the way of the national embarrassment that was last year’s U.S. Open.

Suri, let me know when the USGA is finally ready to present those rules. Thanks.
