After Nike renounced its production of golf clubs, a few players were on the hunt for a new sponsor, including Rory McIlroy. After months without an official club maker, McIlroy has officially joined the TaylorMade team.
The $100 million dollar deal, states that Rory will be using the clubs, golf ball, and golf bag with TaylorMade’s name on it for the next 10 years. He recently signed an apparel deal with Nike as well, adding an additional $200mil to his pockets for the next decade. Not to mention the paycheck from any tournament he wins, which both sponsors are surely hoping for. We’re fairly certain this newly wed will not have any issues paying the bills.
The news comes right before the Players Championship, which will be played at TPC Sawgrass this Thursday. These two deals confirm that Rory McIlroy is the most marketable golfer and athlete in the world right now, with this TaylorMade deal it’s most fiscal commitment to date.
“I tested different combinations, a lot of different stuff, and I came to the conclusion that this was the best way forward for me to try and improve, try and win more, try to get back to world No1, try to win more majors. So I’m really excited about that.
With Rory joining the team, TaylorMade has huge names on it’s roster, including Dustin Johnson, the number one golfer in the world. Jason Day, Jon Rahm, and recent Masters winner Sergio Garcia, are also apart of the family.
McIlroy had been without a club sponsor for a while, going between TaylorMade and Callaway. He was using a Titleist ball but trashed that when he complained about its performance during the Masters in April. Believe it or not, it was actually the ball that made him decide on an official sponsor after all this time.
“I tested quite a few balls and the one that I landed on was really it; the ball was what led me to this point because this is the best ball I’ve ever hit. Then it was just about trying to match everything up to that.”
With Rory’s recent marriage to Erica Stoll and getting papered up by Nike and TaylorMade, it’s definitely going to be a huge turn around for his life and career.
Could this push be what he needed to get back to World No. 1? Only time will tell.
