We’re back at Colonial Country Club this week for the Dean & Deluca Invitational, and although Phil Mickelson may have some beef with the tournament, he has one of the greatest wins in its history.
Mickelson’s win in 2008 was memorable for multiple reasons. The stunning recovery shot from a troubling spot within the trees, a birdie putt to win by one, and a fan jumping into the nearby water hazard are all factors in this incredible win by one of the best.
You can catch the fan jumping into the water at around :30. Someone was clearly excited over Mickelson’s clutch putt for the win.
It’s the interview that took place only moments after that putt that also puts this win on the map. Mickelson was interviewed by a fake reporter who went by the name “Scoops Callahan”. He proceeded to ask him about using his “Billy Baroo” to win the tournament and Mickelson’s response was perfect.
“Why are you yelling. You’re a foot from me.” LOL.
In that moment, I don’t think there could have been anything to bring Mickelson’s mood down, not even a fake reporter. Scoops is actually Tom Gribble, a then sports radio producer turned broadcaster for ESPN Dallas.
Mickelson wasn’t the only to get the Scoops treatment. Some of the other athletes who were subjected to his schtick include LeBron James, Tom Brady, and Wayne Gretzky. Scoops had a running prank that originated with him asking Gretzky about the officials during a post-game press conference in 2005.
Phil has some history with the course beyond this win. After missing the cut in 2011, he swore off Colonial because of the reworking of some holes by architect Kieth Foster. His return will be marked with questions and hopefully some resolve. If not, at least we have these moments to look back on.
