Tiger Woods was arrested on Memorial Day in Florida on suspicion of driving under the influence. He has released a statement refuting claims that alcohol was involved.
Tiger Woods attributed an “unexpected reaction” to prescription medicine for his arrest on a DUI charge that landed him in a Florida jail Monday for nearly four hours. He said he did not realise the mix of medications “had affected me so strongly.”
Woods was arrested about 3 a.m. Monday, Jupiter police spokeswoman Kristin Rightler said. He was booked into a local jail and released on his own recognisance with no bond a few hours later.
In his statement, the golfer apologized to family, friends and fans. “I will do everything in my power to ensure this never happens again.”
The statement reads:
“I understand the severity of what I did and I take full responsibility for my actions.
I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved. What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications. I didn’t realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly.
I would like to apologize with all my heart to my family, friends and the fans. I expect more from myself too.
I will do everything in my power to ensure this never happens again.
I fully cooperated with law enforcement, and I would like to personally thank the representatives of the Jupiter Police Department and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office for their professionalism.”
This comes just a week after he released some positive news. The 14-time Major Champion claimed he was making progress from his fourth back surgery. “I haven’t felt this good in years,” he said. “Right now, my sole focus is rehab and doing what the doctors tell me,” he wrote. Of course social media has jumped on the ironical circumstances surrounding his recent arrest, trivialising the words of a man who was out in his car at 3am in the morning. Would it be facetious to ask why someone worth $740 million drives himself around at such a time? It’s surprising to see this responsibility wasn’t delegated given his recent surgery.
