U.S. Open style: What top players will be wearing at Erin Hills

What’s Rory McIlroy wearing at the U.S. Open? Jason Day? For better or worse, golf fans have become increasingly interested in player apparel “scripts” during major championships.

And of course, apparel makers are keen to showcase new looks and push the envelope at the most-watched tournaments of the golf calendar. Couple this with the limited edition staff bags and headcovers many equipment manufacturers give their staffers, and unique looks abound. Sure, plenty of fans couldn’t care less if their favorite golfers walked the fairways of Erin Hills in garbage bags. But player scripting is another unique element of major golf tournaments and is always worth a look.

But first, let’s remember, at the first U.S. Open at Newport Country Club in 1895, players wore outfits like these.

Fast forward some 120 years, and top players will stroll the fairways in some very different apparel: Synthetic materials, bold colors, technology laden fabrics and shoes…and no plus-fours and tweed jackets.

Here’s a look at what some of the PGA Tour’s top players are wearing at this year’s U.S. Open.

Rickie Fowler

Polos: Jersey Stripe Polo (Thursday), $65; Body map Jacquard Polo (Friday), $65; Levels Polo (Saturday), $65; Bonded Polo (Sunday), $80

Pants: Tailored Tech Pant (Thursday), $80; 6 Pocket Pant (Friday-Sunday), $80

Shoes: TitanTour Ignite Disc (Thursday, Saturday), $180; TitanTour Ignite Hi-Top (Friday, Sunday), $220

Accessories: All In One Belt (Thursday, Sunday), $45; Web Belt (Friday-Saturday), $20; #GoTime Cap (Thursday-Friday), $28; Tour Fade Cap (Saturday-Sunday), $28

Not surprisingly, Fowler will wear hi-tops two of the four days and orange pants on Sunday. Bold stripes and colors, too, continue to be a thing for Rickie.

Sergio Garcia

Polos: Climacool Engineered Block polo (Thursday, Saturday), $65; Climachill 2D Camo Print polo (Friday, Sunday), $80

Pants: Ultimate 365 3-Stripes pant, $80

Shoes: Powerband Boa Boost, $180

Garcia’s Sunday shirt looks like Spain’s soccer uniform…not an accident, you’d assume. Plenty of blue and gray, a tune plenty of players will be singing at the U.S. Open this week.

Jordan Spieth

Polos: UA Playoff Vented Polo (Thursday – water), $69.99; UA Trajectory Stripe Polo (Friday – academy), $79.99; UA Coolswitch Polo (Saturday – Tokyo lemon), $69.99; UA Coolswitch Pivot Stripe Polo (Sunday – water), $74.99

Pants: Match Play Pants (Thursday-Friday, Sunday – academy, rhino gray, academy), $79.99; Match Play Vented Pants (Saturday – academy), $84.99

Shoes: Spieth One, $199.99

Accessories: UA Performance Stretch Belt, $34.99; UA Braided Belt, $39.99; Jordan Spieth UA Tour Cap, $29.99

Spieth only deviates from his preferred blue-gray combination with a yellow shirt on Saturday. Spieth Ones, of course. Interesting how similar his Thursday and Sunday looks are.

Jason Day

Polos: Zonal Cooling MM Fly Blade polo (Thursday-Sunday – sport fuschia, wolf gray, black and chlorine blue), $90

Pants: Flex pant, $110

Shoes: Nike Lunar Command, $135

Accessories: Nike Classic 99 hat (black, white), $35

Jason Day loves himself some fuschia, a color that finds its way into all his major scripting, as does an all-black ensemble. No collars this week, folks, as both Day and McIlroy go full Fly Blade.

Rory McIlroy

Polos: Zonal Cooling MM Fly blade polo (Thursday-Sunday – electro green, chlorine blue, wolf gray and deep night), $90

Pants: Flex Pant, $110

Shoes: Lunar Control Vapor, $175

Accessories: Nike Classic 99 hat (white), $35

Plenty of pastels and Fly blade polos for Rory this week. Also, white cap-white shoe combo errrday.

Dustin Johnson

Polos: Climacool 2D Camo Stripe polo (Thursday, Sunday), $75; 3-Stripes Mapped polo (Friday), $85; Climacool Performance polo (Saturday), $65

Pants: Ultimate 365 3-Stripes pant, $80

Shoes: Tour360 Boost, $169.99

More blue-gray here, with red accents. Adidas likes its players to wear similar outfits, and you can see the points of connection between what DJ and Sergio will be wearing.
