5 Early Impressions From Bungie’s Highly-Anticipated Destiny 2

The day has arrived, Destiny 2 is finally here. Three years after the first game launched, Bungie has released the highly anticipated sequel and fans across the globe have waited patiently to get their hands on the FPS shooter.

For all the great things about the first game, there was certainly a fair amount of downfalls and the concerns were that Destiny 2 may fall short of expectations – although that’s an issue that every major release has to contend with.

Having got my hands on the game and sunk a few hours into what’s on offer, including the campaign, side missions and a friendly game of football (yes, I’m serious), Destiny is eyeing the longevity that GTA V has enjoyed and although it’s too early to assess whether that’s a success, the early signs are certainly good.

Bungie has promised plenty of upcoming updates, both free and available as DLC, and there’s plenty more action to follow. For now, we’ve been handed a very good game that gives players plenty to do as you look to build your Guardian into the hero you need to be.

Here are five early impressions we’ve taken from the game so far:

It Looks Magnificent

One of the first things that grabbed my attention was how beautiful the game is… and it isn’t even in 4K yet. From the lost city to the huge waves on Titan, Destiny is, from an aesthetic perspective, one of the best looking games of the year and it’s only going to get better when my Xbox One X arrives in November.

With each planet having a vast open area to explore, as well as numerous missions and side quests, there’s plenty to see and do. Though Destiny 2 doesn’t quite fit the open-world exploration genre, it does enough to grab my attention.

An Immersive Story

One of the major criticisms of the first game was the story, which felt rushed and unfinished. That certainly wasn’t helped by the exit of the narrative team late in development but it left a game that lacked the emotional attachment that you want from a story-telling perspective.

Thankfully, Destiny 2 is a vast improvement. You’re thrown straight into the deep-end in the opening missions and get a clear picture of what exactly is going on. There’s not really any build up either, it’s straight into the thick of it and it feels like everything the first game failed to offer.

A Proper Villain

Rejoice, Destiny finally offers a proper villain. In the first game, the fight was mainly ‘light’ against ‘dark’ and nobody really had a clue about what was going on. That’s been scrapped for Destiny 2, as we’re handed The Red Legion to battle against and a fierce-some looking villain in Dominous Ghaul.

Whilst that may sound like something straight out of a comic book – and the truth is it genuinely could be the case – from a Deadpool-looking skin aberration to a Bane-like mask, Dominous Ghaul is the big-bad that a game like Destiny needs at the centre of its story.


Plenty of highly-anticipated new releases fail to grab people’s attention immediately and there have been a few games in recent years that I’ve really looked forward to but never quite got hooked on (I’m looking at you, The Division). Destiny 2 is far from that.

As mentioned, I’ve been playing for a few hours and I’ve only just scratched the surface. My gear is quite poor but it’s slowly building up and I’m enjoying the variety of the weapons. The whole RNG aspect of the loot is an intriguing addition, as I seek to upgrade my character and prepare for the end game content that’s to follow.

Plenty of variety

If story-telling in games isn’t your thing then it doesn’t necessarily mean Destiny 2 isn’t for you. It isn’t a game where you need to complete the campaign, unless you want your pre-order bonuses of course, but it’s certainly advisable.

The fact that you can do it in co-op is certainly helpful and you are rewarded with decent gear throughout to help you progress. In the end, though, you could skip the campaign entirely and stick only to adventures, strike missions and raids – although they’re not all available just yet – and still have a pretty good time doing it.
