Carlin Climbers: Two British F3 Drivers Set Sights On Euro F3

This year’s British F3 Champion Enaam Ahmed and his Carlin teammate, James Pull, who is in a close battle for 2nd place in the standings, both completed a test session in the Dallara chassis at Silverstone last week and are both gunning for race seats for the 2018 FIA European Formula 3 Championship.

European F3 would be the natural next step up the motorsport ladder, and having broken records for fun this season in British F3, Ahmed is hoping to get a seat and measure himself against some of the best young single seater drivers on the International stage.

“I want to go to European Formula 3 and I’m trying to get some sponsors. Trevor [Carlin, team boss] believes I’m good enough and I believe him. I’m not saying I’m going to win but let’s see how testing goes.”

James Pull is also hopeful of impressing Carlin in the test enough to go racing in Europe. He’s currently locked in a scrap for 2nd place in the British F3 Championship, and will have to beat Toby Sowery over the remaining Donington Park weekend to secure the position. On the prospects of being promoted, he said,

“I’m excited to have this opportunity, it’s big step for me in my career. The car is fantastic and a lot of great drivers have driven with Carlin in F3, so to have the chance to follow in their footsteps and show what I can do, is a really great feeling. The team at Carlin are fantastic and I know them well.”

There is an impressive alumni that have progressed from the Carlin stables. In fact, 20% of the current Formula One grid has driven for Carlin in the junior categories. Vettel, Ricciardo, Magnussen and Kvyat all impressed for the team as drivers cutting their teeth. Other notable graduates from the team include Will Power, Nico Rosberg, Takuma Sato, Josef Newgarden, Robert Kubica, Max Chilton and Sebastien Buemi.

Both drivers have impressed in British F3 this season and will hope to add their names to this list, and the Carlin team, who are involved in a number of categories, provide an excellent platform for their drivers to showcase what they can do on the track.

But when the test session passes, both drivers still have unfinished business in this year’s British F3 Championship. Champion Ahmed has already matched Ayrton Senna’s British F3 win record, with 12 visits to the top spot of the podium so far. But with three rounds to go at Donington Park, the British driver will want to pick up two more victories to match Jan Magnussen’s all-time record of 14 victories in a single season. Easier said than done, but such is the form of the driver, you wouldn’t put it past him achieving it.

Pull has his own battle, too, a season-long fight with Lanan Racing’s Toby Sowery will finally be settled on the 23-24th September at Donington. It has been a heated fight all season, and the Carlin driver will be hoping he can put a stronger weekend of results together.
