Footballers are delicate and petty creatures, and none more so than current Fenerbahce striker, Robin van Persie, with the Dutchman’s current teammate, Oguzhan Ozyakup, revealing the pair haven’t spoken for a year.
The pair clashed during the Turkish Cup quarter-final last season, with Fenerbahce edging out fierce rivals Besiktas 1-0 thanks to a – you’ve guessed it – Robin van Persie goal; a goal in which the former Arsenal and Manchester United striker celebrated by knee sliding in front of Ozyakup (a retaliation to an earlier confrontation between the pair).
“I was very good friends with a certain player on the field. That changed today. Sometimes you see the real face of a footballer on the field.”

There does tend to be a link with sports stars in that, the more talented and successful they’re, the bigger their ego and penchant for diva antics, so it’s no surprise van Persie found himself caught up in such petulance.
One year on from the heated exchange, Ozyakup was, for some bizarre reason, asked about the incident:
“We still do not talk, usually players make up after games but this was different.
“Maybe we will make up one day but it will not be the same as before. I do not really want to talk about this to be honest.
“I do not think I was in the wrong, if anything I was wrong to show Robin as much respect as I did.”

The fact that the pair haven’t exchanged Christmas cards and pleasantries since, is hardly groundbreaking news – it would’ve carried greater merit had the duo been teammates, like they were back between 2008-2012 when they both were on the books of Arsenal – Ozyakup was one of those continual names that cropped up on the Gunners’ bench for League Cup games, but never actually played for Arsene Wenger’s side.
