Mock The Week: AJ Laughs Off Haye And Wilder Challenges

When the bell goes to signal the start of Round One in Anthony Joshua’s fight with Kubrat Pulev in Cardiff, it’s expected that it won’t be long before the Bulgarian is lying flat on the canvas for longer than 10 seconds.

And the quest for Anthony Joshua to finally have an opponent of genuine quality will go on – Wladimir Klitschko, although a fantastic spectacle and a dogged fight for the first time in AJ’s career, the 41-year-old was a few years past his peak (peak-Wladimir destroys current Joshua).

Klitschko has given his say on the upcoming Joshua versus Pulev fight, and in true dull, ‘sitting on the fence’ style, the giant Ukrainian said:

“I think they’re tough in different ways and I think it’s going to be a very interesting match. I think Pulev has more technique than power, whereas Anthony is definitely a powerful guy. So I think it’s going to be an interesting fight.”

Joshua speaking to Sky News – in the usual way that portrays AJ as something of a nice, humble guy; a sports star that (he believes) we can’t help but love – AJ opened up with a gambit that he knew would do well on social media:

“We’ve got David Feathers (Haye) and Beyonce (Deontay) Wilder.”

Out of the two, Wilder probably offers a greater fight for those boxing purists, but for those part-time boxing fans (they probably make up 90% of the boxing fanbase), getting the bravados of Haye and Joshua in a ring would make for some entertaining soundbites and memes.

“All these guys talk about me all the time and it’s negative, always negative, but sooner or later I’ll be ramming my jab down their throat.

“It’s not a matter of if, it’s just a matter of when when it comes to the likes of David Haye and Deontay Wilder because there has been no era of boxing where heavyweights, middleweights, welterweights haven’t come together.

“We have to fight each other and that’s just the way it’s going to go.”

Anthony Joshua

Sounds like it’s time for these big meanies to stop hiding behind social media, and make the next boxing soap opera episode, happen.
