It looks like Jerry Jones isn’t the only one who changes his views on the NFL’s national anthem protests with any minor shift in the wind. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s memo to the league’s owners was leaked and contained some pretty contradictory rhetoric.
It’s worth noting that the NFL has tried to be sneaky and redirect the link to Goodell’s memo now that people are criticizing him for going back on his word. All other stories pertaining to Goodell are working just fine when you click on the correct link.

Three weeks ago, the national anthem protests reached its peak. This was due to President Donald Trump’s remarks about how it is disrespectful to the flag and what it stands for when players sit or kneel during the anthem.
That same week, Goodell praised those who protested the flag and said he was proud of the league’s
“The way we reacted today, and this weekend, made me proud,” Goodell said. “I’m proud of our league.”
It only took three weeks for Goodell to realize that he had made a grave mistake in the eyes of the American people and the fans who watch the NFL. It’s become abundantly clear that the NFL is losing viewers each week and that the anthem protests are playing a key role in why that is happening.
Here’s what Goodell had to say in his memo this week:
“Like many of our fans, we believe that everyone should stand for the National Anthem. It is an important moment in our game. We want to honor our flag and our country, and our fans expect that of us. We also care deeply about our players and respect their opinions and concerns about critical social issues. The controversy over the Anthem is a barrier to having honest conversations and making real progress on the underlying issues. We need to move past this controversy, and we want to do that together with our players.”
That’s pretty funny, Roger, because just three weeks ago you gushed about how proud you were of the players and owners who protested the flag.

Without saying it, Goodell has accepted defeat at the hands of President Trump and the NFL’s numerous sponsors. With viewership down, sponsors are less likely to sign on with the NFL. And the current ones probably want their money back from Goodell and the league.
In short, Goodell is trying to put out this public-relations dumpster fire as quickly as possible.
Unfortunately, he is too late. Fans, the media, and the players see right through Goodell. He wrote this letter in hopes of saving face and protecting the league’s bottom line. It’s pretty pathetic that the commissioner of the most-watched sport in America needs to backtrack like this. Where is his PR team or close advisors in times like this?
It is about time that Roger Goodell of the NFL is finally demanding that all players STAND for our great National Anthem-RESPECT OUR COUNTRY

It’s obvious that the letter was not supposed to reach the public eye (hence why the league website shields it from the public). But it’s crystal clear where Roger Goodell stands, and it is not a good place.
