“I’m No Superman”: Henrik Stenson’s Season Is Over

Henrik Stenson’s season appears to be over with an apparent rib injury. The number nine golfer in the world according to the Official World Golf Ranking will have to hang up his cleats due to an unfortunate incident that took place outside of competition.

The Swedish born Stenson participated a WGC-HSBC photoshoot last week which may have determined his fate for the rest of this season. Fans and golfers alike have come to expect the outlandish photo shoots for the tournament that takes place in China. Every year around this time, golfers ( sometimes unwillingly) pose in strange circumstances to get everyone hyped for golf in China.

This year the shtick was to suspend professional golfers Stenson, Dustin Johnson and Haotong Li in the air above the Japanese golfer (4th ranked by OWGR) Hideki Matsuyama. The poor fellows hanging by wires were posing in attack position over Matsuyama portraying that they were coming for him in the highly anticipated golf classic.

When announcing that he had injured his ribs, Stenson alluded to the photo shoot as the cause of such injury. He also mentioned that he did not want to do the shoot in the first place and was coaxed into participating by his agent.

Now that the photo shoot has taken its first casualty after years of unorthodox methods, it seems that the WGC-HSBC marketing strategies are due for a revamping. Other big names refused to take part in this year’s shoot and based off of what happened with Stenson, it is likely others will look to avoid next years as well.

Stenson admitted that he was bothered that he was persuaded to take part. When asked about how his injury was sustained, the 2016 Open Championship winner simply responded: “I’m no superman”, suggesting that others may have assumed he was by hoisting him 20 feet in the air.
