How Post Malone Went From Soundcloud Star To Rockstar

Post Malone is one of the world’s most known artists and has had a number of hit tracks that have bought him world-wide attention and success, but how did the talented musician go from Soundcloud star to rockstar?

Born July 4, 1995 in Syracuse, New York City, Post Malone, also known as his birth name Austin Richard Post was primarily raised by his father who Malone credits introduced him to a number of different music genres including rock and hip-hop. While growing up, Post Malone relocated to Texas after his father became manager of concessions for the Dallas Cowboys and Malone began to learn guitar from the hit video-game, Guitar Hero.

During his early years, Post Malone auditioned for popular Alternative band, Crown The Empire in 2010, in which he was turned down due to a string breaking during the audition – an easy mistake for any musician, but surely one that helped shape the direction of his career. Following the audition, Post Malone started immersing himself into the Alternative music scene by hosting a DJ set at the popular event Emo Nite in Los Angeles, spinning a mixture of Alternative anthems from bands like My Chemical Romance.

Post Malone’s career arguably began at 16 when Post Malone created his first mixtape using Audacity and named it “Young and After Them Riches” which he showed classmates at his high-school, Grapevine High School, who eventually voted him “Most Likely To Become Famous” by his classmates during senior year. After high-school, Malone attended college but later dropped out to follow his dreams and relocate to Los Angeles.

After relocating to LA, Post Malone, alongside several other producers and artists formed a brand new¬†music group called BLCKVRD and began recording music together. After being established, Post Malone, along with many other members of the new group moved into a new house in San Fernando Valley together, where Malone eventually met 1st Down of FKi. After getting to know each other, the two collaborated and 1st Down then produced several of Post Malone’s most popular tracks, including “White Iverson.” which was upon completion, uploaded to Post Malone’s SoundCloud account. On July 19, 2015, Post released a music video for “White Iverson” which sparked large praise from celebrities like Mac Miller and Wiz Khalifa.

White Iverson eventually hit over one million views within a month of releasing it and Post Malone quickly gathered high attention from various big-name record labels, where he finally signed a recording contract with Republic Records in 2015.

Following the signing, Post Malone began to work with a number of prominent and well-known rappers in the industry such as 50 Cent, Young Thug, and Kanye West, among others. In August 2015, the artist began doing high-profile appearances and events, like performing at Kylie Jenner’s 18th birthday party where he met Kanye West, who enjoyed his music so much that it resulted to him collaborating with Post Malone on his single “Fade” from his album The Life of Pablo. Post Malone later sparked a new friendship with Canadian singer and songwriter, Justin Bieber, which resulted to Post Malone performing as the opening act for Justin Bieber’s Purpose World Tour.

In April, 2016, Malone premiered his new anticipated new single, “Go Flex” on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show, which received high praise from fans globally. During May 12, 2016, he then released his first full-length project titled August 26, a name that seemingly references the release date of his debut album. Following the success, during June 2016, Post Malone made his national television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, performing “Go Flex.”

In early 2017, Post Malone’s newest album was set to be released in December, before eventually being pushed back to early 2018. In September of 2017, Malone finally released the first single from the new album, “Rockstar” which featured 21 Savage. Shortly after it’s release, “Rockstar” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and held the #1 spot for eight consecutive weeks. Due to it’s huge and unexpected success, Rolling Stone titled the young artist as “one of the most popular musicians in the country.”

During early 2018, Malone premiered his new song that featured Ty Dolla Sign titled “Psycho.” After the tracks released, Post Malone joined a tour with 21 Savage, where he first heard the success of Psycho which debuted at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, becoming Post Malone’s third song to hit the charts within only a few years. Following it’s success, Post Malone released Beerbongs & Bentleys in full in April, which ended up breaking the first day streaming records on Spotify with 78.7+ million streams worldwide. The album was also certified platinum by the RIAA after four days. Post Malone later won Top Rap Song at the Billboard Music Awards for the track, “Rockstar” featuring 21 Savage.
