In saying that, will 2019’s releases follow in its footsteps? Here is what we know about the most anticipated releases of 2019.
1. Star Wars: Episode IX
Most of us have already watched Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi, which hit movie theatre’s in December 2017 by now and if you’re a Star Wars fan, chances are that you’re itching for any hint or sign to give a little insight into what’s to come. While all of the exact details of the movie haven’t yet been published, there are plenty of interesting details that have already emerged about the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX hit, allegedly which has recently cast a popular former Doctor Who star in a key role. Unfortunately, who the former Doctor Who star may be is still unknown.
The latest trilogy of Star Wars films will conclude with Episode IX, which brings back director J.J. Abrams to close out the latest arc of the iconic sci-fi saga after he helmed 2015’s franchise-relaunching Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens. JJ.Abrams directed from a script he co-wrote with Academy Award winner Chris Terrio (previously of Argo and Justice League). The sequel trilogy’s final chapter is scheduled to hit theatre’s December 20, 2019, although is rumoured to have delays.
2. The Addams Family
The Addams Family is another series which most of us would have at least heard of today. While the series was popular back in 1991, it is now making its much anticipated return, except this time with a twist. The Addams Family will be hitting our screens again in October of 2019 in a new animated movie format.
The film is directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, who you may recognise as the previous the directors of Sausage Party, and will feature the voices of Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, Bette Midler, and Allison Janney. The new movie is set to be released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, making it the first MGM film to be distributed by themselves since the successful 2010 comedy Hot Tub Time Machine.
3. Toy Story 4
It’s safe to say that everyone was absolutely thrilled by the announcement that Woody and the gang would be back for a fourth movie – something that would’ve felt so out of reach as a child growing up, watching the series of movies. While it didn’t exactly come as a shock, the excitement still to this day continues to build.
The Toy Story 4 movie first graced the public at a presentation at D23 Expo 2015 (Disney’s big, annual get meeting spot) and came to a close with Randy Newman performing a live rendition of ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’ as green Army men dropped from the ceiling and costumed dancers including Lotso, Mr Potato Head and the rest of the gang sprang onto stage. While the new movie is definitely going to be a favorite amongst younger children, it seems that adults who grew up watching the storyline unfold will be equally as happy with the release.
4. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
The amazing cast of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which is rumoured to be separated into thematic chapters currently includes all-star actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie, among other well-known Hollywood stars under its name. The movie, which is proudly written and directed by Quentin Tarantino is reported to use the infamous Manson Family murders of 1969 as its backdrop, and recently cast the actor who will portray notorious cult leader Charles Manson.
The movie was allegedly filmed in the Playboy Mansion, home to the late Hugh Hefner.
5. Aladdin (2019)
Following the monumental success of the recent Disney film adaptations such as The Jungle Book (2016) and Beauty and the Beast (2017), Disney fans will be happy to know that they’ll be set to experience a “whole new world” as the love story of Aladdin and Princess Jasmine comes to life once again, in a bigger way than ever shown before.
The 2019 remake of the movie is based on the story “Aladdin and the Magic Lamp” from The Book of One Thousand and One Nights, and will now feature not only the original classic tunes of its 1992 film, but also new music from the talented composer, Alan Menken.
The film stars Mena Massoud, alongside Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine and Will Smith as the Genie. Not much has yet been revealed by Disney, despite its early 2019 release, however they did recently release a small clip which you can view below.
