Are you one of these people who when they are depressed they put on songs that reflect their mood and make themselves more miserable? Yeah, me too! It’s great, isn’t it? This tact is particularly pertinent when you are going through the ignominy of a breakup. So if you are currently drinking wine by the bottle and going through tubs of Ice Cream like they are going out of fashion, then this playlist is for you.
Way too good at goodbyes – Sam Smith
You know when you enter into a relationship and you know it’s doomed from the off. Sometimes you power through red flags. The sense of foreboding in this epic track make it a breakup classic.
Worship – Deaf Havana
Can you really argue with a song with lyrics like “everything’s a mess when I’m around you, I wish I’d never found you”? An underrated band and this represents their slightly more mellow style perfectly.
Breakeven – The Script
There are a couple of Script songs that could make this list (I’m looking at you Exit Wound). This song talks of the unfairness of a breakup. The best line in the song is: “I got time while she got freedom”.
I hate u, I love u – Anth Feat Conor Maynard
There are a few versions of this kicking around on youtube. Arguably this is the best. The soothing, emotion-filled voice of Conor Maynard coupled with the brash rap from Anth is a winning combination.
Love Yourself – Justin Bieber
We had to give up hating on Bieber when he kept producing “bangers”. Arguably his best effort. “My momma don’t like you and she likes everyone”. Classic stuff.
F*** it – Eamon
Sometimes when you split with someone you are just angry. This is a great song for everyone wanting to flip the proverbial bird at their former partner.
It’s not about you – Scouting For Girls
The use of the often uttered cliché makes this an instant break-up classic. It manages to be heartfelt, cute and catchy all at the same time. Ridiculous.
Last Beautiful girl – Matchbox 20
“This too shall pass” how many times have you heard that post-breakup? And the gloriously pointed “won’t take you back if you were the last beautiful girl in the world.” Ouchies.
When You Love Someone – Jame TW
If you have kids with an ex this one will reduce you to tears. Not many songs focus on the kiddies and this one does it beautifully.
Let Her Go – Passenger
I am the first to say I hate the “If you love someone let them go” nonsense. But this is a cute song.
I’m Still Standing – Elton John
Good old Elton. This heartbreaking song could be joined on the list by the likes of the more uplifting “I’m still standing” but we are here to mope.
New Man – Ed Sheran
We have all stalked our ex’s new fella/lass, right? No? Just me? This song is about dealing with how your ex. changes.
We Are Never Getting Back Together – Taylor Swift
Hidden beneath the cheesy pop tune is a defiant, non-relenting attitude. Also, it is pretty frigging catchy, right? Pro tip: If you dumped them, don’t play this when they are around – it’s just mean.
You Oughta Know – Alanis Morisette
Jagged Little Pill is in every thirty-somethings CD collection, it’s just the law. Early Alanis was full of scorn and it translated into immensely emotional music. This song drips with angry sarcasm.
Irreplaceable – Beyonce
Beyonce does contempt better than most. This self-empowering ballad is brilliant for feeling like you are a total break-up bad-ass.
Burn – Usher
A song about being the “dumper” rather than the “dumpee” because it’s hard for them too…apparently.
