What Is Porn Addiction And How Can You Solve It?

Porn addiction is an actual thing. I know in the current world we make jokes about pornography and its use but porn addiction is real and has real symptoms. So what is porn addiction and how do you get rid of it?

Use of porn

Porn is more accessible than ever. Reports have shown that 25% of all internet searches are pertaining to pornography. When you consider how many searches take place that is a lot of people looking for adult material (And I’m only responsible for like half of that.)

But it’s not a substance

It isn’t, however, pornography can affect your body in similar ways to a drug. In order to understand why that is you need to have a slight understanding of how the brain works. When you do something that benefits your body in some way your brain gives you a reward for this in the form of a dopamine boost.

Dopamine makes you feel happy. So it is your brain’s way of encouraging you to do this thing again. Reproduction is something that we are biologically hardwired to try and accomplish. So when we orgasm our brain rewards us with a dopamine spike. Because porn provides an easy orgasm we start to associate porn with that high.

Symptoms of porn addiction

There are both psychological and physical symptoms associated with porn addiction. This should not prompt you to start worrying, but if you are going through any of this perhaps it is worth questioning whether you have a healthy relationship with pornography.

Lack of interest in your partner

Pornography can lead to you developing unrealistic expectations. Your brain will start to believe that a woman isn’t good enough unless she has giant fake breasts or that a man isn’t up to scratch unless he has a giant penis.

Erectile dysfunction/premature ejaculation

So this generally is only really an issue for the gentlemen. As you can imagine this can play havoc in a relationship especially when coupled with a diminishing interest in a partner.

Lack of concentration

It really can kill your ability to focus. People who have recovered from porn addiction have said that their concentration span has increased dramatically. One of the issues is that whenever you hit up the internet you are never too far away from something that might make you want to look at porn. I know, sex sells, right?

This list isn’t exhaustive but gives you an idea of some of the signs that you have an unhealthy relationship with adult material. So what if you have, what do you do about it?

So what can I do about it?

Start off with some of the very basics you need to get rid of your porn! If you have mags, get rid of them. If you have a stash of DVD’s dump them in the bin. If you have subscriptions to websites, cancel them. This also extends to anything that you use to masturbate. If you have a vibrator or special ring that you put over your bits, anything like that…Chuck it out.

Big brother is watching

Not literally. Well, at least I hope not. The one advantage of living in this Orwellian nightmare we call the 21at century is that we are interconnected and there is technology to help us achieve many things. One such piece of tech is filtration that can stop you from accessing dodgy sites. This is such an obvious step. Putting a roadblock between you and your addiction will help. However, this may not be enough and if it isn’t you can get accountability software. When you install this it lets somebody else know when you are up to no good. That is great motivation.
