eSports would be nothing if not for its games and today we take a look at one of its most popular. Overwatch. For those of you not familiar with the franchise, if first-person shooters float your boat than Overwatch will keep you buoyed for aeons.
What is it?
You would be mistaken for assuming that Overwatch is just another first-person shooter. Yes at its core that is what it is, but there is so much more to it and that is the reason the game has become one of the world’s most beloved eSports. The thing that sets it apart from its competitors is its depth. When you look beneath the hood of Overwatch there is a lot more going on.
Unlike a lot of games in its genre which really just test an individuals reactions, Overwatch is different. The onus is on teamwork. Teams must work together in the default mode to complete objectives earning their team the point. However it isn’t just a case of everybody having the same access to the same weapons, Overwatch is a very different animal.
Character classes are of vital importance in Overwatch. There are four basic classes but the different characters in these classes all play remarkably different. The offshoot of this is that teams need to work together and there are various strategies that can be employed, each with strengths and weaknesses. This level of nuance you would expect to find in a MOBA, but it works beautifully in this style of game and makes the game a fantastic spectator sport.
A world that is alive
12 maps may not seem like a great deal of choice but in this instance, it’s a case of quality over quantity. In the same way that the variety of character types offers each new game a new feel, the maps play a similar role. Gloriously designed to make every new objective feel different from the last, you won’t be complaining about lack of variety because all of the different ways a game can play out give that variety.
Graphics and sound
There’s no doubt that it is a good looking game. It is highly stylised, rocking the cartoony look that you would probably associate with a game like Fortnite, but with a slightly more subtle colour pallet. It is easy on the eye and this compliments the fast-paced action that has become the games calling card.
In a game where the action is based solely around multiplayer battles, you might think that the sound would be fairly basic, but on the contrary, there is specific dialogue for each character and this is even map-specific. This little touch might not seem like a big deal but it really helps to bring the game to life.
Overwatch as an eSport
The Overwatch league is one of the biggest regular eSports in gaming right now with the playoffs earning the lucky winners vast sums of money. It is not quite in the same bracket as Fortnite and Dota 2 when it comes to the winnings involved but it’s important to remember that the league is played throughout the year rather than just having a one-off tournament. With players trading among teams and teams trading hands for vast sums, make no mistake about it Overwatch is a force to be reckoned with in the eSports world.
Should I buy Overwatch?
That’s a resounding yes. Although it is a little limited due to its lack of a single player mode it is the sort of game you can have a quick match on when you have half an hour to kill or sit and waste an evening on with your buds and a headset.
