League of Legends is one of the world’s most successful MOBAs. In fact, it would definitely be classed in the top two. DOTA2 players will point to how big their eSports tournament is, but players will always have their personal favourite and you can’t argue with the game’s longevity having been around for more than a decade.
League of Legends was built on the back of a burgeoning real-time-strategy spin-off genre which came to be known as a MOBA. If you aren’t familiar with what a MOBA is it’s basically a game presented mostly from a top-down perspective with an isometric view. Within them a player controls a single character on a battlefield and competes as part of a team, as is the case with league of legends players can also summon minions to aid them.
In order to survive this long, the game has had to move with the times. The game developers wisely invested in making it a leading eSport and while it is not the most prestigious eSport, it does pretty well for itself. The company has also made a small fortune with its business model of introducing new characters and new cosmetic items taking advantage of microtransactions.
Celebrate with the team
In order to mark the celebration, the team have decided to introduce some pretty serious birthday pressies for its users. If you haven’t already been doing so you need to log in every day to take advantage of some of these amazing rewards. All you have to do is log in and play a single game to claim the booty. You can even play against bots if you want. Once you have claimed that days gift you will have to wait until 4 pm Eastern time the following day to collect the next day’s item. The cool stuff you can get is as follows:
Day1: Anniversary Icon, Emote, and Ward Skin
Day2: 6,300 Blue Essence
Day3: Masterwork Chest + Hextech Key
Day4: Little Legends Rare Egg
Day5: 3,000 Orange Essence
Day6: 4 Skin Shards
Day7: 25 Prestige Points
Day8: 200 Worlds 2019 Tokens
Day9: 2 Gemstones
Day10: Legendary Skin
Day11: Annie-versary + Birthday Border + Icon
As you can see there is a lot of awesome rewards to claim but by far and away the best is the final Annie-versary skin. If you haven’t seen it, check it out. You will want to max out just to earn it. Totally adorable.
Ten more years?
On such a prestigious birthday it seems a little insensitive to question the future of the franchise. Comparisons between LOL and DOTA2 are obvious, not least of all because the gameplay is so similar. Do not get me wrong, LOL has a huge following in its own right and if we have learned anything from the comic wars between DC and Marvel it is that two very similar and competing brands can co-exist and thrive. But when you take that example you have to think about how DC has floundered recently while Marvel excelled.
With DOTA 2 regularly hosting the world’s most lavish and well-funded eSports event will it start to steal players from its cousin? It must be a worry for LOL but if it is they certainly aren’t showing it.
As we detailed here recently it seems that the future of the franchise lies on mobile platforms. Especially in Asia where this form of playing has risen massively in popularity. If LOL decides to focus specifically on that aspect it could that they corner a very important subsection of the market.
