New Year’s Resolutions For Geeky Gamers

It is that time of the year again when we are all focused on self-betterment. Gym owners are rubbing their hands in glee as they hand out cheap yearly subscriptions knowing their potential customers will probably only turn up to one session. But this year is different, this is the start of a new decade, the year of hindsight, surely if ever there was a time for some resolutions it is now. Here are some good ones for my gaming friends.

Get your exercise on

This might mean getting yourself a gym membership, but it doesn’t have to. We all tend to put on a few pounds over the festive period. Our “winter coat” if you like. But that doesn’t mean we have to stay that way. There is no reason why you can’t get the body you always wanted and it doesn’t have to be dull. Perhaps take up a team sport? Or join a running club, both have social options too which make them seem less of a chore.


Take advantage of free and cheap games where possible

This is especially great for Steam gamers. Steam is nearly always reducing their prices for limited times, sometimes by as much as 90%. If you want to take advantage then plough through the steam shop and add any games you like the look of to your wishlist. You will be emailed if those games go on sale. Trust me nothing gives you a “gamer glow” more than an email from Valve saying “an item on your wishlist is on sale”. Also, make sure if you have an Xbox live subscription to look out for their free games.

Get some vitamin D

Yes, I know this is such a cliché resolution, but it goes hand in hand with getting more exercise, get more sunlight. As gamers, we tend to be a relatively introverted bunch. There is more to the world then our couch and our PC desks. You just have to put some shoes on to access it. For some of you, this might require purchasing some shoes! Don’t worry you can buy these online and have them delivered to your door. Baby steps.

Start a YouTube channel

You game every night. You and your Dota team are hilarious. Why not start that YouTube channel that you always said you would. It doesn’t necessarily mean you will be the next KSI, but watching back at the shenanigans of you and your friends in 10 years time will be worth every second you invest in it right now. What have you got to lose? Self-respect is overrated!

Eat better

As gamers, we sometimes seem to exist solely on a diet of crisps and Chicago Town pizzas. Microwave meals are the order of the day, or if you are feeling particularly exotic you may stretch to a Rustler’s burger. Am I right? This needs to stop. For a start, you are doing damage to your body by filling it with so much garbage but then there’s the expense and also the fact that cooking is actually quite a lot of fun! You should try it, you may surprise yourself.

Be more kind

We all like to spread a bit of Christmas cheer, but don’t let it dry up just because the nights are getting shorter. A wise person once said, if you can be anything, be kind. Why not embrace that? Don’t get me wrong I’m not suggesting for a second that you stop trash-talking online. That is pretty much standard! Just take your time to be nice to the people you live with or work with. Together we can make the world a better place.
